Cut Flower Care Tips
A few simple tasks will help your flowers last longer!
You’ve just purchased or received a bouquet of freshly cut flowers, hooray! By taking a few steps right now and each day, you’ll be able to keep them fresher longer and increase their vase life.
1. Use a clean container
Whether vase or jar, a clean, debris-free container will help prevent any leftovers from clogging the stems and keep bacterial growth (which can cause flowers to wilt faster) away.
2. Trim the stems before placing them in your container
Removing the ends of the stems will allow better water uptake. Use clean, sharp scissors for the best cut.
3. Add plenty of water to vase
Don’t skimp on the water! These flowers are thirsty and might need extra attention to the water level in the first day or two. Do fill your container up say 2/3rd-ish, just in case you forget to change the water the next day ; )
4. Replace water and trim stems daily
What?? Yep, if you do the above, your flowers will last longer. They really will. The stems are going to start to decay and standing water will just help that along faster. Change the water and trim the stems 1/4” each day for the longest cut flower life.
At least change the water every other day : )
4. As you trim stems, remove any foliage that now sits below the water line
For the same reason you don’t want to use a dirty container, the same goes for foliage in the water. Bacteria will form quickly as debris rots. Plus, it will stink up pretty fast : (
5. Don't place flowers in direct sunlight or near a heat source
They don’t need sunlight any longer and will simply dry out faster near a heater.
6. Keep flowers away from ripening fruit and smoke.
Don't place flowers near fresh fruit or cigarette smoke, which produces ethylene gas that shortens flower life.
9. If you really want to go the extra mile - use flower food.
The flowers we sell in jars have flower food added. But when you get home, if you’d like to give them a little something extra, you can make your own flower food with ingredients you likely already have in the house. But just providing fresh water will help a lot.
10. Enjoy!
Hard part’s over. Enjoy your flowers, you are worthy of the joy they bring : )
Please note: Many flowers are toxic to both humans and pets. Please ensure your cut flowers are kept out of reach of children and animals. After handling cut flowers, wash your hands thoroughly before touching your face, eyes, or consuming food and drinks. If you have sensitive skin, we recommend wearing gloves while handling the flowers.
